As the mother of two sons, I urge the FDA to protect all food allergic consumers when issuing guidance or regulations about current voluntary precautionary allergen labeling. The FDA should NOT adopt the allergen threshold that excludes 1.6 million Americans from safe precautionary allergen labeling (ED05). Instead, it should delay its guidance until consumers fully understand what food allergy thresholds are in the first instance and how they can determine their own food allergen threshold. Furthermore, the FDA should conduct a survey of food manufacturers to assess the allergen preventative controls that they use and whether additional measures are necessary to further reduce recalls, especially in cases of mislabeled or cross-contaminated foods. If that is not feasible, the FDA should establish a level that protects at least 99% of the food allergic community, such as ED01, rather than the exclusionary ED05 threshold. Thank you!
