Leading Consumer Organization for Food Labeling Excellence
The Safe Food Label Alliance is dedicated to promoting transparency and safety in US food labeling practices. We work on behalf of the 33 million American food allergic consumers, their caregivers and families by advocating for food labeling policies to keep them protected.
Founded by Julie Mendel Reinhard, the mother of a food allergic son, she has worked as a volunteer leader on food labeling issues starting with her significant efforts advocating for and working with the office of Senator Ted Kennedy and Representative Nita Lowey for the passage of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. She also worked on getting allergens considered as "hazards" in the Food Safety Modernization act of 2015 which now requires food manufacturers to develop preventive controls in order to significantly mitigate the possibility of unintended allergen cross contamination. Now the efforts are to insure that the voluntary May Contain labeling can protect even the most vulnerable food allergic individuals by asking the FDA to further study the concept of thresholds before issuing guidelines or regulations which could exclude 1.6 million food allergic Americans from protection.
We strive to stay in communication with our community. Have a question about how to get involved in our advocacy work? Send us a message and we will respond within 24 hours.
